A midterm is an election held in the middle of a president's four-year term, so the president is not on the ballot. Reuters reports that governorships in many states and nearly every state's legislative seats are also being contested. 2

The big question is control of Congress. As of Reuters' report on 19 October, Republicans held the House 218 to 214, with two vacancies and one independent who caucuses with Republicans, and held the Senate 53 to 47. Reuters says Democrats would need a net gain of four seats in each chamber to take control. 2

Voter registration rules and deadlines differ by state, and election officials say voters should check with their state or local election office. 1
